The Mirror

My name is Giuseppe.

I hate that mirror.

The one in the washroom.

Above the sink.

When I wash my face, or brush my teeth, I try not to look into it.

When I do, inadvertently or on purpose, I don’t recognize myself. I used to be good-looking and with a body musculature shaped by years of work in the mines. Now, I look emaciated, I must have lost twenty kilos and I can see my bones and jutting ribs.

Whatever youth I still had, is now gone. Remaining are but large eyes in the middle of a pale face.

I hate it.

It’s a reminder that I may well die here.

No. It’s a reminder that I am slowly dying here.

I had the flu last week and I had to keep working despite the fever and the weakness. No work meant no food, so I had to work, even while being ill.

It’s October. Soon it will be winter again. Men here die a lot during winters.

I feel weak. I fear I might die.
